A local history book "Beckoning Hills Revisited" lists Esther, Melissa and Maud Hill as three students in the first class at Carenton School which was started by a committee including P. Hill. It is not known if Melissa and Maud were sisters of Esther or perhaps cousins (daughters of Ellis or ???) or not related. There are three other Hill families noted in this book who are apparently not related to Peter and his family.
Noted events in his life were:
• Census, 1861. per Cathy Crawford...1861 census has Peter and Esther living with Joseph, son, Ellis, son, and Christien, dau along with Peter's brothers Calvin, Jr. and Alvin...
• Census, 1871. census lists Peter ,37, farmer living with souse 'Estrin' [it appeared from poor handwriting-must be 'Esther']also 37, both listed as 'from Ireland'and both Methodist living with children Ellis, 13, Linda, 8, Ruby [likely 'Rueben'] ,6, Sarah, 3, and Wallace, 1.
• Census, 23 May 1891. per John Hazelwood May 23, 1891 census of Manitoba lists Peter Hill, 58,a widower with 4 children-Linda, 26; dressmaker; Wallace, 22, farmer; Martha, 20; and Esther, 17. The next entry in the census was Ruben, 24 on an adjacent farm.
• Obituary, 6 Jun 1912, Boissevain Community Archives. Obituary On Monday, Peter Hill, aged 79 years and 27 days passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. R. Oliver, Killarney. On Tuesday, the remains were brought to Boissevain, and yesterday the funeral took place from the residence of his daughter, Mrs. John Opperman, when a large circle of friends gathered to pay respects to the departed. Up to the time that Mr. Hill had the misfortune to fall from a ladder some time ago, he enjoyed the very best of health, notwithstanding the fact that he was near four score years, he was a very active and enterprising man. The deceased was one of the pioneers of the west-he came to this district in the early eighties, and followed farming, in which he made a success. He was of a quiet disposition, and held in high esteem by all who had the pleasure of his acquaintance...
Peter married Esther Smith [39592] [MRIN: 50996033]. (Esther Smith [39592] was born on 6 May 1833 in Dereham Township, Oxford County, Ontario, Canada and was buried in Bluevale Cemetery, Huron County, Ontario, Canada.)
