The Wizard Earl. Was only ten years old when his brother Thomas was arrested and because his uncles had all been executed by the English government, he was the only survivng heir to the Earldom of Kildare. Fearing for his life, Thomas Leverous, a priest, and Gerald's relatives James Delahide and Lady Mary O'Conor kept him concealed. With the assistance of Shane O'Neil, Earl of Tyrone and James Fitzgerald, Earl of Desmond <http://www.tudorplace.com.ar/Bios/JamesFitzgerald(14EDesmond).htm>, he was eventually sent to France until such time as he could return. Those who assisted became known as the "Geraldine League". One of the reasons for the King <http://www.tudorplace.com.ar/aboutHenryVIII.htm>'s intense jealousy and anxiety regarding the Geraldines, both the Kildares and Desmonds, becomes apparent in a letter written to Cromwell <http://www.tudorplace.com.ar/Bios/ThomasCromwell(1EEssex).htm> in 1538: "I ensure your Lordship that his English Pale, except the towens, and a very few of the possessioners, bee too affectionat to the Geraldynes, that for kynrede, maryage, fostering, and adhering as followers, they coveite moore to see a Geraldyn to reigne and triumphe, than to see God come emonges theym..."
