of Flamborough and Holme, co.. York; the latter he sold in 1633, and the former to Sir Henry Griffith in 1636. For his service under the Earl of Essex <Bios/RobertDevereux(2EEssex).htm> (A.D. 1599), in Ireland he received the honor of knighthood; and being involved in the subsequent proceedings of that nobleman, he was arraigned for high treason, but remanded without trial, on a special letter from the Queen, that he and others were unwarily drawn in. On the 20 Mar following, he had her Majesty's warrant, to Sir John Popham, Knt, Lord Chief Justice <Bios/JohnPopham(ChiefJustice).htm>, to be admitted to bail. Sir William was created a baronet by King James I, 29 Jun 1611, served in parliament, first for the borough of Knaresborough, and afterwards for the county of York, from 25 James I to the time of his decease. He became a great advocate for the liberty of the subject, and being imprisoned on account of ship money, adopted a decided part against the King. He was a colonel in the Parliament army, and his name appears in the warrant for the execution of King Charles. He died during the usurpation, 15 Jun 1655, and thus escaped personally the resentment of the restored monarch, but his lands, &., were especially excepted in the general pardon, granted by Charles II, as likewise, all pains, penalties, and forfeitures, as though the Act of Grace had never passed. He died without surviving issue.
William married Dorothy Fairfax [62234] [MRIN: 551618041], daughter of Thomas Fairfax 1st Baron Fairfax [57902] and Ellen Aske [57903], on 15 Feb 1607/08 in Newton Kyme, Yorkshire, England. (Dorothy Fairfax [62234] was born on 13 Jul 1590 in Denton Castle, Bilbrough, Yorkshire, England and died on 9 Mar 1654/55.)
