Sir John Holles, 2nd Earl of Clare was born on 13 June 1595 at Haughton, Nottinghamshire, England .1 He was the son of Sir John Holles, 1st Earl of Clare and Anne Stanhope .1,2 He married Hon. Elizabeth de Vere <p6613.htm>, daughter of Horatio de Vere, 1st and last Baron Vere of Tilbury and Mary Tracy , on 4 September 1626 at St. Batholomew's-the-Great, London, England <pd141.htm>.1 He died on 2 January 1665/66 at age 70 at Haughton, Nottinghamshire, England .1 He was buried on 23 January 1665/66 at St. Mary's Church, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, England .1 His will (dated 12 August 1659) was probated on 30 May 1666.1
Sir John Holles, 2nd Earl of Clare held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for East Retford from February 1623/24 to June 1626.1 He was styled as Lord Houghton between 2 November 1624 and 1637.1 He was invested as a Knight on 2 June 1625 at Greenwich, London, England .1 He succeeded to the title of 2nd Baron Houghton of Houghton, co. Nottingham [E., 1616] on 4 October 1637.1 He succeeded to the title of 2nd Earl of Clare, co. Suffolk [E., 1624] on 4 October 1637.1 He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Nottinghamshire from 1642 to 1643.1 He held the office of Warden of Sherwood Forest in March 1645/46.1
