General Notes:
"BROOKFIELD -- was formed from Paris, (Oneida co.,) March 5, 1795; and Columbus (Chenango co.) was taken off in 1805. It is the S.E. corner town of the co. Its surface is a hilly upland, broken by the valleys of Unadilla River and Beaver Creek. Unadilla River forms the E. boundary. Beaver Creek flows through near the center, and the E. branch of the Chenango through the N. W. part. Several streams take their rise in the town. The soil is a gravelly loam."

ANTHONY DEAD; Sketch of a Pioneer Citizen of Cedar Rapids.; At 2:40 this morning the silent reaper visited the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Anthony, claiming the former its victim. For several weeks he has been suffering from a combination of lumbago and heart trouble which became serious last Saturday, since which time he has grown rapidly worse until death relieved him. Mr. Anthony was born in Brookfield, Madison county, New York, Dec. 23, 1820, being the oldest of five children, two of whom survive him. In 1847 he was married to Marilla H. Mabie, whose noble Christian life, energetic nature and cheery disposition have been an inspiration to him for more than fifty years. Their declining years have been years of unusual happiness, surrounded as they were with loving children and grandchildren, who have availed themselves of every opportunity to keep the cup of happiness in old age full. The aged wife, tp whom the entire community extends its sincerest sympathy at this time, together with seven of the nine children born to the union, were at the bedside of the deceased when the angel of death bore his spirit on its flight to eternal rest. The eldest son, F. A. Anthony of Chicago, arrived last night in time to be recognized and receive his father's blessing. The other children who survive him are Mrs. M. M. Hall, Mrs. E. O. Edson, Mrs. J. M. McElheran, Charles F. Anthony, James Riley Anthony and George A. Anthony, all of this city, who have been with him during his last illness. He was a member of the G.A.R., having fought valiantly with the Twentieth Iowa volunteers from l861 to l865. Mr. and Mrs. Anthony were charter members of the First Baptist church of this city, having united with same in l860. His character and religious principles have served to develop the highest type of citizenship and fatherhood.
