"Marilla H. Mabie was born at Portage, Alleghany county, New York, March 22, 1824. She was married to James R. Anthony February 11, 1847, at Rockford, Ill. In March 1860, they removed to Cedar Rapids since which time they have lived in this city until March 1, 1900, when the devoted husband and companion for more than half a century passed beyond, leaving the aged wife a blessed memory of years of toil and accomplishment during the pioneer days of this vicinity. "Nine children came to the home, six of whom survive the mother -- Mrs. M. M. Hall of this city, Mrs. E. O. Edson of Miles City, Mont.; Mrs. John McElheran of Ogden, Utah; F. A. Anthony, Chicago; J. R. Anthony, South Omaha, and G. A. Anthony, Washington, D. C. These sons and daughters have the profound sympathy of the community in their bereavement. "Mrs. Anthony was a charter member of the First Baptist church of this city, having unitied with the local church in 1860. "For several months she had rapidly declined until a beautiful release came while patiently waiting the welcome summons. "The funeral was held at the family residence, 56 Fifteenth avenue west at 2:30 this afternoon. Rev. John Hastie of the Calvary Baptist church conducted the services. Internment was in Linwood cemetery. "A long busy life devoted to her home and its demands, to the neighborhood and its needs, to the community and its opportunities, has gone out from among its accustomed surroundings. So much a part of every worthy local movement was she in her active years that her passing seems but a temporary absence on a mission for the general welfare. ""She is not dead; she has but passed/Beyond the mists that blinded here/Into the new and larger life/Of a serener atmosphere."
