/19/ JOHN ATHY (3), son of Mary and George Athy, Jr., #4. Born Prince George's Co., Md., ca. 1730; orphaned ca. 1734; raised by an uncle; appears on list of Militia as having voted for Col. G. W. Fairfax, Fairfax Co., Va., 11 Dec. 1755; served as a private in the Virginia Colonial Militia and received 4 pounds, 8 shillings, pay in Lunenburg Co., Va., Sept. 1758; married Sarah FOSTER (b. ca. 1740; d. Morgan Co., Va., ca. 1831), daughter of Thomas and Sarah Cross Foster, probably Prince George's Co., Md., ca. 1765; said to have lived in Caroline Co., Va., before living near the Occoquan River, Prince William Co., Va.; enlisted as a Corporal in Captain Philip Richard Frances Lee's 8th Company of Colonel Hugh Mercer's 3rd Virginia Regiment of Foot, Continental Line, when the company was formed in Prince William Co., Va., 6 February 1776; his unit joined Washington's army in August 1776 and participated in the battles of Trenton, Princeton, Brandywine, and Germantown before wintering at Valley Forge; discharged at Valley Forge, Pa., February 1778; hauled wheat for the army, Berkeley Co., Va., 26 February 1781; appears on tax list, Prince William Co., Va., 1782; moved to Berkeley Co., Va., where he bought 150 acres of land in 1782 which he sold in 1784; became foreman for a plantation on Opeckon Creek, Berkeley Co., Va., the property of Jeremiah Strode, Sr., father-in-law of his daughter, Elizabeth; moved to Hampshire Co.
