Frances Howard was born on 31 May 1590. She was the daughter of Thomas Howard, 1st Earl of Suffolk and Katherine Knyvett.1 She married, firstly, Robert Devereux, 3rd Earl of Essex <http://www.thepeerage.com/p10303.htm#i103025>, son of Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex <http://www.thepeerage.com/p10275.htm#i102745> and Frances Walsingham <http://www.thepeerage.com/p2828.htm#i28275>, on 5 January 1605. She and Robert Devereux, 3rd Earl of Essex were divorced in 1613. She married, secondly, Robert Carr, 1st and last Earl of Somerset <http://www.thepeerage.com/p1222.htm#i12220>, son of Sir Thomas Kerr <http://www.thepeerage.com/p1223.htm#i12222> and Janet Scott <http://www.thepeerage.com/p1223.htm#i12223>, on 26 December 1613. She was also reported to have been married on 5 January 1605/6. She died on 23 August 1632 at age 42.
From 5 January 1605, her married name became Devereux. As a result of her marriage, Frances Howard was styled as Countess of Essex.1 From 26 December 1613, her married name became Carr. As a result of her marriage, Frances Howard was styled as Countess of Somerset.
