Acceded: 1119 World Book Encyclopedia says: Calixtus II (? - 1124) was made archbish op of Vienne in France in 1088. He supported Pope Paschal II in his campai gn against lay investiture, the practice of bishops receiving their appoin tments and power from prices. Calixius became pope in 1119. He called the first Council of the Lateran in 1123. This council attended by almost 5 00 bishops, canonized the prohibition of lay investiture and introduced many reforms into the church.

Pope Calixtus II was born in Burgundy, France. He was also known as Gui of Burgundy. He was the son of William II "the Great" Count of Burgundy and Mâcon and Stephanie of Longwy . Pope Calixtus II was elected on 8 February 1119 as Pope. The Pope's right to nominate bishops was agreed to with the Concordat of Worms during his pontificate.
