In the 28th year of Henry III, upon the division made of the proper ty of Hugh de Albini, E. Arundel, then made, had the castle of Arundel ass igned to him for his principal seat, thus becoming the 5th E. Arundel; a nd soon after that, in consideration of 1,000 pounds fine, had livery of h is own castles of Clun, Blancminster, and Schrawurthen. In the 42nd ye ar of Henry III, he was made captain-general of all the forces designat ed for guarding the Welsh marches. He was on a commission to sign a tru ce with Llewellyn ap Griffith, Jun 1259. He was made Keeper of Salop and S tafford, Dec 1263. He fought at Lewes for the King on 14 May 126 4. On 18 Sep 1264, he and others besieged Pevensey Castle, and captured e nemies of the King. A mandate was issued to Simon de Montfort, son of t he E. Leicester, to take security from John Fitzalan, who was under suspic ion, either his son as hostage or Arundel Castle. This mandate insisted th at he deliver one or the other to Simon, 26 Apr 1265. He was made Keep er of Sussex, where he was to stay and arrest disturbers, 18 Apr 1266, a nd to repress disturbances there, 27 Jan 1267. In the baronial war, he app ears first to have sided with the barons, and afterwards with the Kin g. He held five knight's fees in Sussex, and lands as Oswestry, Salop, et c. His wife held in dower part of Arundel Forest, 5 Jul 1281. ![]() John married Maud de Verdun [10405] [MRIN: 4586], daughter of Theobald le Botiller Chief Butler of Ireland [10394] and Roesia (Rose or Rohese) de Verdon [3709].
