"John Milton, being a mere boy when his father died, was sent to school and received a good education, so that he taught school in Lower Granville, N. S., in the summer of 1862, being there on a visit; then, after being home in Ontario, the next year, he attended Alleghany College, Meadville, Pa., two terms 1864-65, then taught in Port Burwell, Ont., 1866. Near the close of that year, he purchased a scholarship in the Bryant & Stratton chain of Commercial colleges, and went to Chicago, Ill., and attended there graduating in 1867. Soon after he got a situation as bookkeeper with Wisdom & Son, where he remained till July 1871, when he packed up and moved to Gentry Co., Mo., (time of the great fire in Chicago), and there taught a set of singing classes that winter, returning to Chicago again in June 1872; and there engaged as shipping clerk for Hepp & Shoenthaler. In 1873, he became bookkeeper for Smith Bros., but in the fall he moved to London, Ont., and opened a store for the sale of musical instruments, making a speciality of the Mason & Hamlin organ. In 1875, he changed his relations into the subscription book business, which he prosecuted with success till 1879, when he moved to Oakland Co., Mich., and there and in St. Clair Co., he taught music. He moved to Deckerville, Sanilac Co., in the fall of 1880, and there taught the public schools. In December, 1881, he opened a jeweler shop and sold sewing machines; but moved to North Branch, Lapeer Co., in 1885, and has been jeweler and stationer there since; also chorister, superintendent in the Sunday-school, and deacon in the Baptist church. Since 1890 he has acted as Deputy Great Commander of the Knights of the Maccabees, and has organized several tents, thus building up the cause in the state at large. His father-in-law, Asa K. Warren, brother to Dr. Ira Warren (1806-1864), of Boston, claimed near relationship to Gen. Joseph Warren (1741-1775); died near London, Ont., May 3, 1867, aged sixty-nine; Clarissa Waters, his widow died Feb. 27, 1881, aged seventy-nine years."
