In this capacity he secured the use of Hessian <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hesse> and Hanoverian </wiki/Hanover> mercenaries to help suppress the American Revolution <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Revolution>. In the same capacity he helped to secure the survival of Sweden <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sweden> as an independent nation by counteracting Russia <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imperial_Russia>'s plan to undo the Revolution <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gustav_III_of_Sweden#Revolution> of Gustavus III <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gustav_III_of_Sweden> in 1772.
