for the attainder of Charles Neville, 6th Earl of Westmorland <http://www.tudorplace.com.ar/Bios/CharlesNeville(6EWestmoreland).htm>, Edmund would have succeeded to the title. Edmund Neville was styled as Lord Neville, erroneously. In 1574 "flying from the persecution of Queen Elizzabeth" he went to Flanders, where he served as an officer under Don Juan of Austria and the Duke of Parma. In 1584 he returned to England. In Feb 1584/85 he was implicated in Parry's plot <http://www.tudorplace.com.ar/Documents/parry_plot.htm>, and even though he turned Queen <http://www.tudorplace.com.ar/aboutElizabeth.htm>'s evidence, and was pardoned, he was still imprisoned in the Tower of London for 13 years. Accusations had been made that Edmund was a Catholic conspirator against the Queen <http://www.tudorplace.com.ar/aboutElizabeth.htm>. It appears that he may instead have been the odd person out in a love triangle at court. In any event, Edmund's petition for the title was never accepted. On 19 Oct 1603 he was granted a pension of £600. Edmund fled England with his mistress, Francelliana Townsend in 1612. He died intestate and in poverty, still considering himself the seventh Earl of Westmoreland, and his wife considered herself the rightful Lady of Westmoreland. His estate was administered on 13 Jul 1646. Edmund's son Ralph similarly thought of himself as the eighth earl.
