Knight of the Garter <http://www.tudorplace.com.ar/Documents/Knights%20of%20the%20Garter.htm>. Governor of Rouen and served in the French wars. Created Duke of Touraine in France by the Duke of Bedford, the Regent. In 1433 the crown admitted the claim of John Fitzalan, then Earl of Arundel, that the earldom "was and always had been vested in the castle of Arundel". The claim was false, but that's neither here nor there, since the crown accepted it. Under that reckoning, Roger De Montgomery, who was created an Earl in 1067 and given lands, including Arundel Castle, was first Earl of Arundel, although he was never known by that title. His younger son was attainted and the title was then given to William d'Aubigny, who married Henry II's widow, who brought the Castle to him as part of her dowry. The fifth d'Aubigny Earl had no children and Arundel Castle passed to his nephew John Fitzalan in 1243. These first d'Aubigny holders of Arundel Castle were either known by othere titles or as "Earls at Arundel". Then his grandson, Richard Fitzalan, was specifically created Earl of Arundel in about 1289. So Richard Fitzalan was either the first Earl of Arundel or the eighth in the d'Aubigny line depending on how you want to count it.
John married Constance Cornwall [15763] [MRIN: 13674], daughter of John of Burford Cornwall 1st Baron Fanhope [15762] and Elizabeth of Lancaster Plantagenet Duches of Exeter [2427] [9C3G-HBW].
John next married Maud Lovell [18144] [MRIN: 8980], daughter of Sir Robert Lovell [18790] and Elizabeth [18791].
